PETER BORTHWICK
THIS MOMENT
Release date 25 Sepetmber
Up-and-coming Jazz sensation Peter Borthwick’s debut album THIS MOMENT is an up tempo and refreshing collection of songs from the 50’s to the 80s, ranging between swing, funk and Latin vibes. Performing alongside a stellar collection of musicians including legendary saxophonist Alan Barnes, singer, comedienne and Broadway Artiste Lea DeLaria and pianist and composer Janette Mason the album showcases Borthwick’s talent as a singer and his infectious joie de vivre.
A choral scholar of Durham Cathedral, Peter has been singing his whole life. His career as a Jazz artist began in a small restaurant in Chiswick and in the Pigalle Club, Piccadilly, and since then he has become a name on the London Jazz scene, performing at Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz clubs, and making regular appearances at The Arts Club on Dover Street where he has a residency. Whilst evoking the spirit of Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire and celebrating Peter’s love of Cuban music and big band, THIS MOMENThas a strong contemporary feel and a sound as generous as the singer’s smile.
Produced and arranged by Janette Mason ‘One of this country’s finest Jazz Composers’ (Peter Quinn of Jazz Wise) THIS MOMENT is a collection of songs chosen for their fabulous melodies and nostalgic charm. A great party album, there’s something for everyone, with tracks ranging from Latin and groove to classic jazz standards from the American Song Book.
The album begins with a cheeky rendition of The Continental. With strong Latin rhythms and a big band sound, this is a signature Mason offering. So too, See you in Cuba has a sunny, fiesta feel and Peter’s passion for Cuban music culminates in the tongue-in-cheek, retro duet of the Desi Arnaz’s hit, Cuban Pete (covered by Jim Carey in ‘The Mask’). Peter’s energy is infectious in the brassy, funky Little Green Bag with Lea DeLaria’s scat packing a punch in her special guest appearance. The title track, From This Moment On, has a classic jazz feel which showcases Peter’s with up-tempo swing and includes a dazzling solo by Alan Barnes.
Janette Mason’s innovative arrangements include a number of songs having their first Jazz treatment, including Georgie Fame’s hit Yeh Yeh and a heart-warming version of Andrew Gold’s ballad Never Let her slip away. For the traditionalists, Peter’s achingly tender and ever-so-slightly gravelly, The Lamp Low, with all the atmosphere of a smokey jazz club of a bygone agewill have listeners swooning.
Peter is riding high on a craze for everything retro and 50s, particularly following the success of The Artist. Produced with precision and sensitivity by Janette Mason and Lea DeLaria, THIS MOMENT has everything you could want for a summer album, it’s joyful and original, musically ambitious and points the way towards a bright future for this exciting new artist.
